    Val dAran

In Spanish eyes the Vall d'Aran is the valley of all valleys (the word aran means 'valley'). It is a green and fertile oasis of forests and meadows, enclosed by jagged mountain summits.
The Vall d'Aran used to be cut off from the rest of Spain as soon as the first snows blocked the mountain passes leading to the south and east. There was only one pass that remained open all year — and it led northward, to Argut-Dessous, in France. Thus the kings of Spain were never able to visit their Aran domains during the winter unless they travelled by way of France. Not until 1948, and the completion of the tunnel to Vielha (Viella), was the area accessible from Spain all year round.
Val dAran is in the Catalan Pyrenees region of Spain
